Slumdog Millionaires!
Indiscriminate littering of plastic bags clogs up Kolkata’s street drains which results in water-logging in several areas of the city. During monsoons, the city almost comes to a standstill! Some city environmentalists are petitioning the municipal authorities to ban the widespread use of plastic bags in the city, also because the toxic material remains in the soil for years. However, plastic bags have become an indispensable part of our daily life. They have several advantages, including being cost effective, and hence a “ban” on plastic bags is not working. The consumers and shopkeepers alike want plastic bags.
Recently, I came to know that some entrepreneurs living in the slums of Kolkata have found the solution to this problem. They have installed a plastic recycling unit near the dumping grounds (where the plastic bags are dumped along with other trash). They collect the plastic bags from these places and recycle them into small plastic granules. These plastic granules are similar to the ones produced by the petrochemical companies – plastic is converted into small granules and then transported to the various industries to be converted into the respective plastic product. Of course, the recycled plastic granules are not as good as the “virgin” ones, but they are not much inferior either. They can be used to make several plastic products like pens, chairs, components of a car among others; only the products used for food packaging are not allowed to be made from this recycled plastic.
The “recycled” plastic granules sell for around 1/3rd the price of the “virgin” ones –and the difference increases considerably as the price of oil increases!
From my field research, I know that it is not “clean” recycling as some polluting gases are emitted. However, larger amounts of gases are released when municipal authorities burn the plastic bags in the dumping ground! I feel the government should provide pollution control devices (they are inexpensive) that can absorb the harmful gases that are being emitted.
Also, as you can see from the picture, the men collecting the plastic bags from the dumping ground work in unhygienic conditions. I feel they should be provided gloves, masks for better working conditions.
What I want to showcase here is the entrepreneurship in the slums of our cities. They are aware of a social problem, came to know of a sustainable solution and implemented it.
These are the future millionaires – “green” entrepreneurs –that we should celebrate in a movie!

The kind of entrepreneurship to celebrate
Hi Pal!
I agree with you... this is the kind of entrepreneurs we should celebrate. Has this solution been considered by the local government in Kolkata?
Hey Maria, Unfortunately,
Unfortunately, no...but we are planning to take this up with the Department of Environment...we will be having a workshop soon, where we will invite them to discuss this and other issues...we have also involved a reputed climate research institute to help our cause...
Old Country Wine with Fizz?
It seems that you are a genius- your knack to spot these entrepreneurial ventures with a difference is matched in today's society. This speaks highly about your intellectual abilities and the judges of the Essay Competition who selected the right winner!
Moving on from the unflattering patronage, I would like to know about your plans to make a difference. Without much disregard to the city, I have learned from the Missionaries of Charities that Kolkata is the city of slums. How do you intend to make a difference through your entrepreneurship?
It is very well served to make motivational statements and take tangential steps like passing on an idea to a red-tapist/ bureaucratic society. Equally cliched are statements like someone has to begin somewhere- the fact is that little concrete is ever achieved- the city of slums still remains at large.
I would be very interested to see how the width of your intellect, creativity and zeal is complemented by its depth? Or put rather harshly, and pardon me for this drastic change in tone towards the end, is there any depth at all?
well said...
Dear Anonymous,
You need not apologise for your choice of words -i understand talking about these issues are "in"
thing these days!! I will bullet in some of my "practical" projects and will provide you with a detailed plan of action when you give me your mail ID.
1. I have formed Climate Smart Initiatives with a climate change research institute. Here we network existing "green" entrepreneurs and also train budding ones to take up profitable enterprises to address both poverty and pollution. http://www.juglobalchangeprogram.org/ download the brochure from the side for more details.
2. I am negotiating to sell one of my business plan/model and its eco-friendly products to an investor. The business will generate employment for women in one of the slums of Kolkata. (I will also be honoured as a top global entrepreneur by Goldman Sachs in NY next month for this project
-so the investor will make sure the project is implemented!)
3. I have been consulting HC Plastic (check post below) to increase their production and to ensure they get funds from the government (i understand the bureacratic problems but I have made some solid conatcts over the past years). This will result in a better, healthier environment for the slum people involved in this plant.
4. I am conducting a feasibility study for a biodiesel plant in Kolkata, for an investor who wants to duplicate his american plant here to reduce costs. This will generate enormous employment here and will address india's energy concerns.
To ensure some of our "theoretical plans" gets implemented I will meeting with a budding venture capitalist in germany later this month. So you can expect more such updates!
Hope this will help you to fathom my intentions! You will have to bear with me for my "cliched" statements, my activities have constraints as I am an undergraduate student.Old wine is priceless and hence has no fizz (fyi i am a teetotaller) I am new and will learn from my mistakes, but then again a knife is sharpest when its new!!! Looking forward to more exchanges...
Coca cola on the rocks........
Well, now that Mr. Pal has spoken about his projects, let me ask you about
your concrete achievements in this field , apart from "learning from the
Missionaries of Charities that Kolkata is the city of slums".
This is actually constructive piece of comment, unlike yours, because if you
take my advice, then this ignorant world can get a hint of your great works
apart from being very sharp at passing negative comments on constructive
posts.
And whatever you do, please don't be ashamed of your name & write it with
your posts from next time!!!! I am sure it can't sound so bad!!

I just moved back from India
I just moved back from India - hopefully temporarily. There are some small scale productions in Gujarat (and elsewhere) which take plastic bags and shred them into fibers, then weave the fibers into baskets, bags, book covers etc. The plastics aren't chemically altered - just literally shredded, and the resultant textiles look pretty good - really colorful. I'd love to import them and sell them to raise money for the education programmes i work with there but I have no idea how to go about that kind of stuff. I'm just a lowly biologist.
I am extremely sorry for the
I am extremely sorry for the late reply. For the past couple of months I have been working with an established and "clean" plastic recycling unit and I think they can produce what you are looking for. If you can please give me our contact details (mail ID) I will ask them to contact you directly to work it out. Their mail ID is hcplasticgreen@yahoo.com -HC Plastic
My initial research tells me that it will very cheap tp procure, so I think it will be profitable to raise funds this way. Also from the article you provided, I feel it can generate employment for women SHGs too. I feel a business plan is truly sustainable when it address both environmental and social issues and is profitable too! This fits in perfectly. Great thinking!
I will send you more details about the unit once I have your email ID. I would love to know about your educational activities as well -thats my area on interest also.
